| History of the Sandys Club
The
Club was founded by the hard work of Mr. H.H. Brown a Past President of
the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, and Mrs. Hattie Gilbert a Community
Activist of Sandys Parish, on 27 April 1994 and received it Charter on
28 May 1994. The Kiwanis Clubs of Hamilton and St. George’s
sponsored the Kiwanis Club of Sandys to receive its Charter. The
Kiwanis Club of Sandys with the Kiwanis Clubs of Hamilton and St.
George’s joined the New England District in 1998.
The Kiwanis Club of Sandys founded the first Builders Club in Sandys Secondary School in Bermuda in 1997. The Club started the first Rodeo (Child/Family Day) events in Bermuda in 1998, followed by two (2) others in 1999 and 2000.
In
2000/2001, Geoffrey Butler-Durrant is the Club’s first The New
England District, Division 32, Lieutenant Governor
In
2001/2002, Barbara Lewis-Mills is Division 32’s (Bermuda) First
Female Lieutenant Governor and in the restructing of the District of
New England, Division 26’s First Lieutenant Governor. The
Club sponsored an Island Wide (Bermuda) Essay and Painting contests,
involving all the schools in Bermuda, the students were judged
according their school category: Senior, High School/ (Middle School)
and Primary level. The Club has donated a Television to the
Secondary and to each of the Primary (2) schools in the Parish. The
Library of the West End School has received books from the Club. The Club has a scholarship for the Island Senior Schools, in the name of our Founder Mrs. Hattie Gilbert. The
Club invites students from the Secondary/Middle Schools and Primary
Schools in the Parish to submit letters, outlining why their mother
should be nominated the best mother of the year, to be recognized at a
‘Thanks to Mom’s Day High Tea’. The
Club has adopted a young student in one of the Government’s
Middle School, who is from a single-family unit and has medical and
physical challenges. The Club organizes an annual picnic for the young people of the Parish with their families in August each year. We raise funds for these events through Bake Sales, Gospel Concerts, Fashion Shows and High Teas. The Club assists wherever it can when called upon in our community by members of the community. Kiwanis is a World Wide Service Organization of men and women who share the challenge of community and world improvement. Our
members have had the opportunity to make business and professional
contacts in community of Sandys Parish and the rest of the Bermuda
Isles, we have leant first hand about our local, national and
international issues, improve and use leadership skills, participate in
the life of our community work, and develop friendships. Part
of the humanitarian, civic projects and special needs of our community,
giving the elderly food and clothing, visiting the Senior Rest Homes in
the Parish and at Christmas singing carols and giving gifts to the
residents of these homes. The Club recognizes the
contributions by the senior members in our community, by having them as
our ‘Special Guests’ to a special post-Easter Lunch. We organize the annual Santa Claus Parade for the Parish and a Children’s Christmas Party. The Club has present certificates for clothing and food to families in need.
